Halloween is just around the corner, and everybody knows that Halloween means plenty of free sugar and sweets! To keep your teeth happy and healthy, it’s good to think ahead and be smart about the amount of candy you are consuming.

While a little sugar never hurts, eating too much Halloween candy can be seriously detrimental to your oral health. Here are a few tips to help you prepare to have a healthy Halloween:

Eat candy in moderation. Consuming too much sugar can cause harmful bacteria in your mouth to produce acid, eroding your tooth enamel. If you consume lots of sugar and don’t properly clean your teeth, more and more enamel is destroyed and cavities form. To avoid this, eat candy in moderation and be mindful of exposing your teeth to high amounts of sugar.

Brush your teeth. Brushing your teeth every day is an excellent way to combat the influx of sugar they meet during Halloween! Scrubbing the bacteria and plaque off your teeth is a tried and true method of avoiding cavities and an important part of your daily routine. Be sure to use fluoride toothpaste and be thorough!

Drink more water. In between your Halloween treats, drink lots of water! Drinking water is an incredibly easy way to prevent tooth decay. Water rinses away sugar that would otherwise stay on your teeth all day long!
